Knowledge vs. Nurture: Which is More Important in a Trainer?

In my last post I shared tri trainer and I parted ways last week. I wanted to wait a few days to write about it, to have a clearer picture. The experience of parting ways made me reflect on what is important to me in a trainer. I signed up with tri trainer (tt) because tt was recommended to me, and had a breadth of knowledge in the tri world. And tt has the knowledge! I learned so much and know I am a WAY better and smarter triathlete from the experience.

But what I found is I need the nurture component as well. I need a pat on the back here and there, and words of encouragement at times when I'm bringing too much stress, or self doubt upon myself. Yet in this training scenario, there was virtually none of that.
And when the heel injury occurred ~one month ago, I was really starting to swim in my own pool of debilitation and of guilt (thinking the injury was my fault), and I wasn't gettin' any extra words of encouragement from tt. In fact it was the opposite. So I started communicating less, and tt started getting more frustrated. It got my training head in a bad space.

So we came to a crossroads this past week, where it was evident it wasn't working. With only five weeks left to Vineman, I realized what I needed most at this point was nurture/motivation to keep me believing I can do this, and not added stress/anxiety. So we parted ways.

And like the good girlfriend on the TV's Housewives of New York said "There are three sides to every story: Mine, The other persons, and the Truth", my side is only one of three. But what I learned is I need a trainer with a balance of 75/25. 75 knowledge and 25 nurturing/motivation. That's my equation. tt was 95/5. I think that can work for a some ps, but not for this gal.

Now my question to all of you: What's the right equation for you in working with a trainer? 50/50,  80/20? Also, I know a lot of you are certified, getting certified, or hope to become certified in a training discipline. What's the magic equation for you as a Trainer?

Whew - reading about your past week made me tired. It sounds like you made the right choice on TT. We can all find and follow a plan, but I need someone to tell me I can do it (once in a while) or to cool off and rest for a while. I really need 30% nurturing. I hope you find a new person ASAP. There are some nice ladies out there that might understand your goals a bit better. good luck!

Hmmm...I think I'm more the other way, more knowledge than nurture...and sometimes I need a kick in the butt when I'm slacking. Hence my change. if you're looking at finding someone new, I did a lot of research, talked to a lot of athletes about their coaches etc.

Sorry it didn't work out for you, but I think you made the right move. I think each athlete is going to need something different. As a coach, I think it's important to recognize what each athlete needs and cater to that. I hope you can find someone who can tune into your needs! In the meantime, you gained a lot of knowledge, so ride that into Vineman and rock it!
I think both knowledge and nurture/support are important, but the quantity of each needs to be tailored to individual client. For ex., I would need more knowledge than nurture typically, but if injured or going through self doubt, I would need a lot of support and encouragement. In a way, giving support/nurture is also knowledge - the knowledge of what your client needs and when! Sounds like you learned from this experience!
You need to find who is the right fit for "YOU" so I think you did the right thing. I need some nurture as well...probably a 80/20 would be good. So are you looking for a new tri trainer?
I think its a tough line to balance, as the coach, they need to try to figure out whether the client need nutured or just need to swift kick because the client is just not working hard enough, I do not know how to figure that out.

Yeah, you totally made the right decision. I don't have a coach at all but follow a training plan. I know there are some great coaches out there - have you checked with gotribalnow.com? I think they have some coaching. I am about 10% nurture I think...I like the kick in the pants, but if I am injured, I sure don't want to be treated like it was my fault. GOOD LUCK!

Hi AM...
I missed last post but did go back and read. You have to do what works best for YOU! It's your money, it's your performance and you know what you need. I had a personal trainer and it ended extremely ugly because I needed the hand holding, not ONLY the "get your ass into the gym and just do it". It was so hard because I committed 3 years of my life to trying to make it work but in the end, it wasn't the right fit. It was one of the hardest things I ever had to do because I became so dependant on the weekly schedules, the tossing ideas out, and the friendship I developed...and to this day I still miss it and crave it but I'm more at peace, too, if that makes sense. (you missed my blog from back last November...if you had been around, you'd have seen a VERY ugly me!!!). My frustrations now are my own, not because my trainer imposed them on me, you know??? So I am very sorry, I know it's a very difficult decision. As a personal running coach, I sort of cater my balances to each individual. I have one client that just needs a TON of hand holding and I have a couple others who just do their thing. One client is going through a lot of knee problems and we discuss all the possibilities and do a lot of trial and error to find a solution. Many trainers would not do that. But that's what I like about it being "personal" - that each person has their own set of needs and I hope I can be the type of coach that can give what each needs. I hope you have the resources to find another one, and one that works for YOU! Best of luck, girl. And a BIG HUG to you (cuz us nuturing girls like those!)

Good luck finding your perfect coach. I have to have some nurture too. :)

this makes me think of something I saw at the gym this morning that really bothered me. I saw a trainer working with a client, hardly speaking to her. He does this with several of his clients and it's frustrating. He'd give her a quick explanation of what he wanted her to do and then hardly even paid attention. Her form wasn't great and she obviously wasn't getting much from it and he didn't seem to care. It also bothered me that she didn't say anything, but it's his job! She could hurt herself while she's paying him to help her get in shape.

If I had a trainer, I'd want someone who would show me how to do things right, push me (but not too harshly) and support my achievements. Not someone who hardly pays attention.

I've never worked with a trainer or coach, but if I ever do, I'd want an 80/20 mix and no negative vibes. You definitely did the right thing. Good for you for recognizing the need for a change, that could not have been easy for you. Good luck finding the right trainer for you!!

I agree with everyone else...it has to work for you and you are the only one who knows if it is or not! You'll find the right coach! And they will be excited to have you to coach...your on fire! That is a coaches dream!
Good luck!

Hum I would have to agree with everyone else too! I would be and 80/20 I need the nurture and positive negativity KILLS!
IN my past experience as a personal trainer for about 15 years, i found that every client is different. Some clients needed more motivation and nurturing than others. Thankfully, I was very in tune with each one and was able to adjust accordingly....that's what a good trainer will do. Funny that you referenced the NYC housewives. I was watching the reunion last night...ha! What a fiasco and everyone has a different interpretation of what happened.

As someone being coached for years off and on, I found one that truly cared for me, not just professionally, but on a personal level too. Hope you find one that fits for you!

I'm far from working with a coach, but I am convinced that I would need some pats on the back once in a while.
It's not easy to make these decisions and I think you were smart to listen to your needs.

Well, I agree with the girls above - you need to find YOUR right fit. I can add that having you as my first trainer, I was fortunate to find someone who did give me the motivation and nurturing that I needed as well as the knowledge and discipline. I found it extremely important to have both! So, feel good that as a trainer yourself, you offer the whole package!
