Designing My Mental Game: Callin' All Mantras!

Hello! I'm callin' for all YOUR running/race mantras! I'm putting together my Mental Game Plan for my Healdsburg Half Marathon this Saturday, and while I have a few staples I've relied on in the past, I'd LOVE to hear what mantras keep you in the game for your race.

To back it up a bit, I had the privilege of listening to former Olympic Sports Psychologist,  Bobby McGee, last year at the USAT Level 1 coaching triathlon clinic in Santa Monica, CA. He shared this Mental Game Plan exercise with us:

Exercise #1:Print a map of your race route and visualize the following:
1. How will your body feel at the different points of the race
2. What will you tell yourself for motivation during the different points of the race
3. What do you want to remember during the race

Next, write those sentiments on your race map. You might have 'relax shoulders' during the second half of your run, and 'I AM an endurance athlete' as your overall mantra written at the top of the map. Keep the map in a visible place (bathroom mirror, kitchen fridge)  to refer to often.

Well I've got my map, and top few fav's: BRING IT ON!, Beat that inner voice, it's okay to puke afterwards, Feel the Braids (my new one;-), and You have all day to recover/rest...on my dockett.

But I still don't have my overall mantra tag line up top to refer to. So help me out! What's your race mantra? What keeps YOU in your race? thx;-)

Great idea! I need this for my race on Sunday as well- especially since I feel as though my mental game is way off this year. I will be interested in seeing what others use as their mantras- and perhaps can find a perfect one for me on Sunday. Thanks for posting this just in time!!
My mantra is "the race is the reward for all of the hard work you have put in", lets face it, its the training that sucks, the day in and day out daily grind. Its the race is when we finally get to "show off" all of the suffering we went through to get to the starting line. And the finishline is the ultimate reward.

I just ran my first full marathon (yay!) and I wrote some phrases on my hand to think about when things got tough along the way. I had "Dig Deep," "Enjoy the Journey" "Just This Once" (even though I knew I'd be doing this crazy stuff again--wanted that one to fall back on in case it was WAY harder than I expected, haha), "Courage," (the inside of my arm also said "Run with courage"), and "Mind over body." I also had "Pace not Race" in mind, and kept telling myself to live the life I imagined, doing things I never thought possible.

So that was my cheesy dose of inspiration for 26.2 miles. And it really did help! I still can't believe I did it somehow...

Like BDD...I remind myself that THIS is what I trained for. All of those tough training runs were supposed to gt me to this day called 'Race Day'...And I'm here.

Great idea and good luck.

I spent time in the military so my mantras are a little hard core. The first one is Harden the F-Up and the other is Suck it Up Cupcake. They both remind me of the drill sargeants I had in basic.
When I feel a lot of pain, I try to dissociate from it by saying "I am a machine, I just run"; this strategy removes the mental clutter/negative thoughts bc machines don't think, they just "run".

One foot in front of the other. That's all I had to try to keep remembering during Chicago. Remember also you trained for it all, and for every wall there is a door to go through! Good luck!

It helps me when to the beat of my feet I repeat over and over again "I am tough, I am strong, I can run all day long".

I use a couple. A general repeat over and over with every step is Focus, Achieve... it keeps me present and puts making my goal front and center in my mind.

If I'm in a particularly tough portion of a run my mental pep talk goes as follows... "I can only live THIS 10 minutes of my life once. How do I want it to look? Do I want to remember that I slowed down and walked or that I pushed through?"

Good luck finding your mantra... long runs are all about the mental game!

While I've never really had a standard mantra, during Detroit I found myself thinking things like, "I'm rocking this marathon" and "I own this marathon." A couple days before the race I had a great talk with my brother and two things he said stuck with me a throughout the race as well. He said at some point in the race I'd have to make a decision (and I did). He also said, "Leave nothing out there. There is no reason to walk another step once you cross the finish line. There will be people to help you."

My son told me to "run with your heart" when I left to go run my first marathon. I always keep that in mind.

Hi All!
can i just say how great all of these are?! and i hear your voices behind them.

BDD- SO agree with you. a lil prob for me though is that I mentally don't think i did put in the training necessary to achieve the goal I want. Guess I need to get over that!

Thank you so much for all these. Keep em' coming...love hearing what you use!

"IF YOU CAN'T RUN, THEN WALK. AND IF YOU CAN'T WALK, THEN CRAWL. DO WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO. JUST KEEP MOVING FORWARD AND NEVER, EVER GIVE UP."-DEAN KARNAZES
That quote

And

I worked with oncology kiddos all summer I just remembered them when I got tired because you damn well know they got tired of fighting but they never quit so why should I? I think that you have a whole new respect for the word tired when you see those kids.

That keeps me going because tomorrow is not guranteed so enjoy the ride while you can!

Mine is rather trite, but it's seen me through a lot:

That which does not kill us . . .

I'm also a big fan of taking my mind off the run completely by trying to remember long dialogues from my favorite movies and long songs (I love Meatloaf's Paradise by the Dashboard Light while I'm running)

Its all mental
Breathe deep

Those work for me. Sometimes I remind myself that I actually LIKE doing this (running) and to keep smiling and have fun! I also tell myself "Good job" a few times.

VegitariRun posted this, but as for me, it's "just this once". Of course deep down I know I'll be doing it again, but at the time I promise myself that for now, it's just *this* run that I need to get through.

My other favourite is "it's supposed to hurt" :-)

That's a great exercise. Thanks for sharing.

I always say to myself "Push it girl!" it's also on my Road ID. It just reminds me to push myself and I can do it.
Lisa said…
I can do this!

Also, just get to the next mile when I'm having a not so great run :)

I remind myself that I love to run. The good, the bad, the pain, the smiles. I love to put one foot in front of the other and move myself through time and space through my own burning of energy.
Smile and straighten that back like the paparazzi are always watching!
I don't have anything brilliant to share. But, good luck! I know you'll do great!

If I've trained for the race during training I usually end up telling myself (as the training starts to hurt) that I'll need this for the race. Then in a race, I just tell myself I did it in training.

If I haven't really trained I just tell myself the faster I go the sooner it can be over.

What a great idea! I don't really have a mantra, but sometimes when it gets tough I'll say to myself, "You can do it, just keep going!"

I tell myself "I am a runner!" Its new to me so just knowing I am running longer distances makes me smile and pumps me up!!!!

Me....I say, "I've got this!"

Not sure why but it works for me.

i will, i can, i am

i am strong

i find when i am tired i try to refocus on my form and that helps as well....

I love this tip of printing out the map and visualizing it. I do that too, but my maps aren't quite so big!
My mantra is usually simple "you can do this" or "you can't have the stack of pancakes until you cross the finish line"! haha!

Good luck! You're going do great!

I ask myself if I could push any harder without compromising the end of the race!! Gook luck!

During training I like to look deep inside and determine if I like what I see. I alway push hard during a race so my family doesn't have to wait as long at the finish line!

Seriously, one of my favorites is I make the sound of a couple of pistons firing, like in an engine. It works in the water, on a bike, and on the run...

I love this idea! I can imagine referring to this kind of map in my head while running a race. I typically listen to my breath to know when I'm at my "cruising speed" and there is something comforting about that familiar "in in, out out" cadence. Good luck!
